Google starts new Fuchsia OS on original Nest Hub
Google's Fuchsia OS has bee in development for some time and now it appears to be heading in some devices. Firstly it will be in first - generation Nest Hub.
Google's long awaited Fuchsia OS is starting to quietly roll out its first consumer device, the first generation Nest Hub, 9to5Google reports. Google's work on Fuchsia OS first emerged in 2016, and the open source operating system is notable for not being based on a Linux kernel, instead using a microkernael called Zircon. "You don't ship a new operating system everyday, but today is that day," tweeted by Google Technical Lead on the Fuchsia OS project, Petr Hosek.
The change will swap the device's existing Cast OS with Google's new Fuchsia software. The report notes that the update process will happen over the coming months and that there will be no immediate changes to the interface or experience for Nest Hub owners.
Unlike Android, Fuchsia was developed by Google and is not based on Linux. It can run Android apps , but Fuchsia is not meant to be a one for one replacement of Android or Chrome OS.
Google previously described the Fuchsia project as an operating system for "modern phones and modern personal computers" suggesting that it envisioned it for more than just smart home or internet of things devices, at least at one point.
"Fuchsia is just about just pushing the state of the art in terms of operating systems and things that we learn from Fuchsia we can incorporate into other products," Android and Chrome chief Hiroshi Lockheimer said cryptically in 2019. Google's smart display is unlikely to be the last device or even form- factor to receive an update to Fuchsia OS. But the exact implications for the switch might take longer to emerge.
